The baroque way of life is syno-nymous with zest for life. So typical for the Hallertau in the 17th century, this style heralded an end to the horrors of the religious Thirty Years’ War and the plague. The rediscovered love of life soon found clear expression. The onion-shaped towers of the village churches are a welcoming sight in almost every village, and the visitor can only marvel at the high-carat masterpieces, such as the Asamkirche church in Rohr. | | It is not just the orna-mental churches which testify to the region’s deep reli-gious faith. Festivals too, such as the Gillamoos folk festival in Abensberg, the Gallimarkt fair in Mainburg or some of the much smaller fairs in the Hallertau, have their origin in church life. The pride in the traditions that have grown and evolved is evident in the lively customs visible and tangible everywhere in the Hallertau.
